In Brussels, there are more than 6 million square metres of empty space. At the same time, thousands of people are looking for decent, affordable spaces to live in or set up initiatives. Since 2007, a number of associations have used temporary occupation as a tool to create projects of collective interest, combining different uses under one roof. Although there is currently no legislation dedicated to temporary occupation in Brussels, associations specialising in this field have emerged. This is the case of the non-profit organisation Communa, created in 2013.
