After the capital moved to Ankara, Istanbul remained the country’s economic and cultural heart, growing rapidly through industrialization, migration, and urbanization. The city saw a boom in construction of new neighborhoods, though this rapid expansion also brought challenges like traffic congestion, strained services, and widening inequality.
